Buddha came to understand that the destiny of beings was not a result of mere chance or fate, nor was it dependent upon the arbitrary actions of a supreme being. Man’s destiny could be traced to former deeds, good and bad.
He devised the Law of Dependent Origination of all phenomena – the law of cause and effect. He found that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
According to Buddhist philosophy every deed – mental, oral or physical – has a consequence. The entire universe is governed by moral principles. Any attempt to act contrary to these principles or disregard them will only result in the increase of suffering.
Wise and wholesome deeds performed under moral principles reduce suffering and bring happiness, while unwise and unwholesome actions carried out without regard to moral principles result in the end in the increase of woe and suffering.

Most leaders tend to view teamwork as a social engineering problem: take x group, add y motivational technique and get z result. But working with the Bulls I’ve learned that the most effective way to forge a winning team is to call on the players’ need to connect with something larger than themselves. Even for those who don’t consider themselves “spiritual” in a conventional sense, creating a successful team – whether it’s an NBA champion of a record-setting sales force – is essentially a spiritual act. It requires the individuals involved to surrender their self-interest for the greater good so that the whole adds up to more than the sum of its parts.
Yet even in this highly competitive world, I’ve discovered that when you free players to use all their resources – mental, physical, and spiritual – an interesting shifts in awareness occurs. When players practice what is knows as mindfulness – simply paying attention to what’s actually happening – not only do they play better and win more, they also become more attuned with each other.

Before entering a man’s office I would pause for an instant and think of the many things I had to be thankful for, work up a great big, honest-to-goodness smile, and then enter the room with the smile just vanishing from my face. It was easy then to turn on a big, happy smile.
Give every living soul you meet the best smile you ever smiled in your life, even your own wife and children, and see how much better you feel and look. It’s one of the best ways I know to stop worrying, and start living. When I began doing this, I found I became more welcome everywhere.
The word “deserve” comes from tow Latin words, “de” which means “from” and “servire” which means “to serve”. Therefore, the word “deserve” means “from service”. The people who do best in our society, with few exceptions, are those who are serving other people better than someone else. Your whole focus in your career should be on serving other people better. Then you will deserve every dollar you earn.
The look on his face is a complete shock. I didn’t understand the meaning and value of education, the hardship and stress it causes most parents and children. I’ve never thought of education like that. School was always a place I managed to escape, not a thing to be treasured. Setting aside the stock was merely something I did because Frankie specifically mentioned college and I wanted to help. When I saw what it meant to him, however, I was the one who got educated.
Helping Frankie provides more satisfaction and makes me feel more connected and alive and myself than anything else that happens in 1996. I tell myself: Remember this. Hold on to this. I never had much success overcoming objections with clever comebacks. They read well in textbooks, but when I tried to use them, they only seemed to lead into an argument. I found if a hundred times more effective when I could get a direct testimony from one of my “witnesses”.

I believe that vulnerability – yes, vulnerability – in one of the most underappreciated assets in business today.
Even when there is disagreement, I’ve found people will respect you for putting your cards on the table.
The message here is that we can go through life, particularly conferences and other professional gatherings, making shallow, run-of-the-mill conversation with strangers that remain strangers. Or we can pout a little of ourselves, our real selves, on the line, give people a glimpse of our humanity, and create the opportunity for a deeper connection. We have a choice.

This taught me a lesson which I’ve had to learn: the importance of being a good listener, showing the other person you are sincerely interested in what he is saying, and giving him all the eager attention and appreciation that he craves and he is so hungry for, but seldom gets!
Try looking straight into the face of the next person who speaks to you, with eager, absorbed interest, and see the magic effect it has both on yourself, and the one who is doing the talking.

Follow-Up is the key to success in any field.
Give yourself between twelve and twenty-four hours after you meet someone to follow up. If you meet somebody on a plane, send them an e-mail later that day. If you meet somebody over cocktails, again, send them an e-mail the next morning.
But remember – and this is critical – don’t remind them of what they can do for you, but focus on what you might be able to do for them. It’s about giving them a reason to want to follow up.
